Claire’s second Christmas

Eric and I agree, this was a really good Christmas. We had so much fun with Claire, and all of the Corliss family. Although Claire still doesn’t understand what Christmas is, she still enjoyed all the pretty decorations, opening presents, playing with her cousins and getting dressed up.

We went to a breakfast with Santa at the Puyallup Pavilion a couple weeks ago. Sandy got us all tickets and it was a fun thing for the family to do together.

DSCF0884Erica says we need to put a gallery together of all the photos where Claire is crying and Scarlett is looking at her quizzically. That would be almost all the photos we have of the two of them!Moms making it work. Green eyed girl!Eyelashes. Aunt Kara and Uncle Fudgie came into town for a few days. We had a gift exchange breakfast with them a couple days before Christmas. They gave Claire a cool walker/push toy with lots of colors, noises and parts to play with. Claire really likes it!On to another family gathering! We had dinner at Great Grandma and Grandpa Corliss’ house a couple days before Christmas.
Christmas Eve we headed back to Grandma Sandy’s house for the Britt Family Christmas party. Claire was getting a little worn out by this point, as the photos evidence. Note Gavin in this photo….always looking good for the camera!Christmas chaos. Adorable Christmas jammies! I love them!A little Christmas morning at our house. Claire got some boots from me and Dad. You think I would know her size, but the 12-18 month boots are still HUGE for her! She can probably wear them next year. Tiny feet!A stuffed toy elephant from mom. All the cousins Christmas morning! I’m sure Sandy must have been worn out by this point. (She had to take Kara and Fudgie to the airport at 5:00 AM!)Grandma Sandy spoiled all the kids with tons of presents. I’m a fan of presents, so I thought it was fun!Honey got a special Christmas treat and got to come with us to Sandy’s. She only tried to eat the garbage once. Having Claire in our lives makes everything so much more special now. I loved Christmas this year and I usually just kind of tolerate it. Next year will be even more fun!

Uncle Chris and Uncle Jordan sent Claire a sweet gift this year. It made me cry! You can see the slideshow they made at this link.

Fifty-two weeks

We made it to ONE YEAR! Our 52nd week of photos:

We had Claire’s one year doctor appointment this week. Here are the stats:

Weight: 17 lbs, 3rd%

Height: 29 inches, 50%

Head: 18.3 inches, 80%

She got four shots and cried so hard she threw up. 🙁 She is below the curve on the weight chart, but the doctor said she isn’t worried. Claire has been consistently tiny this whole year– and she is making the right amount of progress each month.

I was very sentimental on December 10th this year. The day Claire was born was so huge for us; there was so much excitement, anxiety and joy. It made me feel really happy and lucky to think back on the experience of that day and wonder at everything that has happened since.  This last year has turned me and Eric into real grownups. That means we have a lot of responsibility, but along with it has come such fulfillment and love. We are both constantly in awe of the beautiful little Claire we created, and we love her so much!

I think we can make the call on Claire’s first word: it’s “kitty”! She said it quite clearly a few days ago at Grandma Sandy’s house while playing around with Grayson (Sandy’s cat). Since then she has been saying it quite a lot, though she sometimes uses the same sound for both “kitty” and “doggie.” It comes out like, “ki-gi”. It’s so cute!

We are still working to get Claire moving more. She has these sensory issues that are getting in her way. She doesn’t like the feeling of heavy pressure or weight on her hands or legs. So tipping sideways is scary for her, as is being on all-fours. We are still working at physical therapy once a week, and are now going to start occupational therapy. Hopefully the occupational therapy can help us get her over the sensory part that is so frustrating her. I know Claire will be so happy when she can crawl or walk- she is so smart and needs to explore more. Her therapist says she is a little too smart– she knows that falling can hurt, and has figured out ways to get through life thus far without having to move!

I am going to try taking her to the Little Gym next week and see if that can motivate Claire better. She really hates the physical therapy and and has developed a real fear of the place. Maybe if we try getting her in a fun environment with other kids, music, dancing, etc she will forget her fears and start working without even realizing it. I am hopeful because Claire stood on her own, without my support at all, while at the playground yesterday! I think watching all the other kids really helps her. She is such a social little creature.

Christmas tree

This year Claire was able to participate in our annual tradition of cutting down the Christmas tree at Scholtz farm. Last year she was just about to be born and made my walk around the farm pretty painful!

It was a cold, rainy day but we had fun! Grandma Sandy came with us to help. So happy to have a real holiday family tradition!
